TDOT proposes ‘choice lanes’ to ease I-24 gridlock between Nashville and Murfreesboro

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is exploring new ways to ease one of the state’s busiest and most frustrating commutes: the stretch of I-24 between Nashville and Murfreesboro.

As part of its Southeast Choice Lanes Project, TDOT is considering adding about 26 miles of new optional lanes designed to keep traffic moving through Davidson and Rutherford counties.

What are choice lanes?

Choice lanes are new, additional lanes that use pricing to proactively manage demand and provide travel-time reliability. They allow motorists to maintain consistent travel speeds — typically around 45 miles per hour during rush hour — even when the adjacent existing lanes are crawling or at a standstill.
