Reaction mixed for Tennessee speaker’s idea to drop bachelor’s requirement for teachers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton says lawmakers are exploring whether teachers should still need a bachelor’s degree to be in the classroom.

Sexton says the idea, which he calls “out of the box,” could help ease the state’s teacher shortage. Under the concept, people could become eligible to teach elementary grades with a two-year associate’s degree and internship instead of a four-year degree.

“A four year degree, a lot of people think that you have to have it to be successful. That is not accurate,” Sexton tells us.

But not everyone agrees that’s the right approach…
