NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new report found that last year, Tennesseans were among those who spent the least on alcohol in 2024.
SmartAsset analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis to find their results on one-year changes in alcohol spending per person. Overall, it found Americans spent about $228 billion on alcohol for private consumption — that works out to about $898 per adult.

In Tennessee, though, average spending on alcohol per adult came in at much less: $693.70. Despite that placing the Volunteer State among the bottom states for alcohol spending, the analysis said it represents about a 2% increase on spending when compared to the year prior.
Utah, West Virginia, Mississippi and Oklahoma were also among the bottom five states for alcohol spending per person last year. Check out the interactive table below to see SmartAsset’s full ranking:

Despite the relatively low alcohol spending per person, News 2 previously reported that data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that adult drinking rates in Tennessee rose between 2013 and 2023 by 6.9 percentage points — and Tennessee was the only state to see the increase.
