A few strong storms Sunday night, colder by Monday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — We continue to monitor the risk for a few strong storms Sunday evening into the early overnight hours. The primary concern will be for gusty winds. Despite this storm chance, a strong cold front will usher in a nearly 40-degree temperature drop from Sunday into Monday.

A newly-issued Wind Advisory is in effect for all of Southern Kentucky and nearly all of Middle Tennessee. Wind gusts at times this evening through early Monday morning will be near or above 40 mph.

Looking at the wind gusts, they will generally be between 20-40 mph from Sunday afternoon to early Monday morning. As the line of rain and isolated storms moves through, some gusts will exceed 40 mph. Some wind damage is possible, mainly from toppled trees (and possible power outages).

The Storm Prediction Center has kept a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for a few southwest Southern Kentucky counties for Sunday evening. The risk is higher north of the Ohio River where greater wind dynamics will support stronger to severe storms, which is where a Slight Risk (level 2/5) has now been added.

While the reduction in the severe risk, there can still be some strong storms on Sunday evening, and we cannot rule out a return to the severe risk in succeeding outlook updates. The latest models show storms developing after 5 p.m. near the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and then moving east through the evening. While the line is not very impressive, there will be a narrow zone of strong wind gusts approaching 40+ mph. The cold front slides in early Monday morning, putting an end to the rain and colder temperatures arriving.

The biggest storm threats will be damaging winds and some severe storms. Brief heavy rainfall could occur. The wind shear is very impressive, so an isolated tornado is not ruled out, but mainly gusty winds will be the main concern.

The biggest change after the cold front comes through is the highs on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will fall from highs in the 70s on Sunday to highs in the 30s on Monday. Overnight lows will be in the teens and 20s.

We’ll end 2025 colder than average for the high temperatures, but rebound briefly to the lower 50s on New Year’s Day.
