Tennessee agency recommends providing funding, data tools to address homelessness

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations proposed Tennessee move forward with several recommendations to address homelessness statewide.

The first: budget state funds to prevent people from losing their housing. Dr. Michael Strickland, Research Manager at TACIR, gave an explanation to state and local leaders earlier this month.

“Going through homelessness can inflict many harms, including a severe deterioration in health and an increased risk of suicide, as well as the cost to communities of such things as running emergency shelters or holding people in detention,” Strickland explained.

In a memo to state and local officials, TACIR also recommended the state invest more into a homeless management information system, which can provide data and help answer questions about the state of homelessness in a given area.
