Tennessee introduces saliva swabs for DUI cases: Refusal could lead to harsher penalties

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A new Tennessee law changes how law enforcement approaches drunk and impaired driving.

The legislation allows officers to collect saliva swabs from suspected intoxicated drivers.

Mike Dunavant, the Deputy Executive Director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference says those samples help as the investigation progresses.

“That ultimately can be used later on for a search warrant to obtain the blood, which is the most reliable and accurate indicator of blood alcohol content or blood drug content.”…
