Tennessee rolls out new, noncitizen driver licenses in 2026

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — For thousands of legal, permanent residents of Tennessee, the new year not only brought a new calendar, but also a new driver license.

Part of a new law that went into effect Jan. 1 requires different IDs and driver licenses for those who are legal, permanent residents of Tennessee, but not U.S. citizens.

Republicans who passed the bill during a special legislative session last January said the change was to make it easier to determine voter eligibility and prevent anyone who is not a U.S. citizen from voting.

“We anticipate it will be a small x on there, similar to the way the restrictions are now for contacts or something else, but that license would not be valid to register to vote or to actually vote,” House Majority Leader William Lamberth (R-Portland) said…
