Middle Tennessee landfills near capacity as lawmakers push waste-to-jobs plan

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Middle Tennessee is quickly running out of room for its trash, and state environmental officials warn the problem could become a costly crisis within the next decade.

According to data from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), Tennesseans generate roughly 13 million tons of waste each year.

In Middle Tennessee alone, five of the region’s seven permitted landfills could reach capacity in less than ten years…
