Falling trees and frozen pipes: Insurance agent explains what to know if you need to file claims on these common cold weather issues

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Back-to-back weekends of sub-freezing temperatures could pose major issues for homeowners across Tennessee.

Fred Duke Jr., an Allstate insurance agent in Bellevue, told WSMV4 that he’s been received “constant calls” this week in the wake of the winter storm that left at least a dozen people dead across the state. Most of those calls have been about trees falling on top of houses, water pipes freezing and car accidents.

Here are some tips to keep in mind if you face these issues, according to Duke.

What to know if a trees falls onto your home, car or property

Duke says that if a tree hits your house, homeowner’s insurance should help pay for the cost of removal. However, if it falls in your yard, that’s typically an out-of-pocket expense. If only part of the tree is on your home, insurance will often only cover pay for that part of the removal process, but not cover the part that has fallen to the ground…
