Pros and cons of an ever-growing Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — An estimated two dozen people move to Rutherford County every day, according to University of Tennessee researchers, and Murfreesboro is central to that growth.

With new restaurants, shops and apartments, Murfreesboro might be in the middle of Tennessee, but when you’re talking growth, it’s at the very top. U.S. Census data shows the population of Murfreesboro skyrocketed from 108,755 in 2010 to nearly 168,387 in 2024.

The University of Tennessee’s Boyd Center for Business and Research estimates Rutherford County’s population will reach 400,000 in the next couple years.
