Glyphosate debate reaches Tennessee as $7.25 billion settlement, federal order collide

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup and one of the most widely used weedkillers in the country, is again at the center of a national fight that now stretches into Tennessee.

On Tuesday, Bayer agreed to a proposed $7.25 billion settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits from people who claim the product caused their cancer. The company denies those allegations and maintains glyphosate is safe when used as directed.

One day later, President Donald Trump signed an executive order invoking the Defense Production Act to prioritize domestic glyphosate production. The order calls the chemical critical to national security, arguing it protects the American food supply.
