RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN (WGNS) — Drivers in Rutherford County who are on the autism spectrum now have access to a simple tool designed to make traffic stops safer and less stressful for both motorists and law enforcement officers.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Community Engagement Unit has partnered with the KTG Foundation of Harriman, Tennessee, to distribute free blue envelopes that help autistic drivers communicate more effectively with officers during traffic stops.
The blue envelope, sometimes referred to as a “blue card” program, allows drivers to store their driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance documents in a clearly marked envelope. When stopped by law enforcement, the driver can notify the officer they have a blue envelope, which alerts the officer that the driver may have communication or sensory challenges…
