Conway leaders reject rezoning request for proposed townhouse development

The future of a vacant lot on Sycamore Street remains uncertain after the Conway City Council voted against a rezoning request that would have allowed the property’s owner to build townhouses on the land.

The petition was one of more than a dozen rezoning and annexation requests heard during Conway City Council’s meeting Monday afternoon, June 15.

According to Conway Planning and Zoning Director Jessica Hucks, the property’s owner, who lives in Charlotte, N.C., acquired the 1.07-acre property in March. The property currently is vacant and is zoned R-1 (Low/Medium-Density Residential) under the city’s Future Land Use Map. The owner requested the property be rezoned from R-1 to Medium-Density Residential (R-2) in order to develop townhomes on the property, which are not permitted within the R-1 district and require a minimum zoning classification of R-2.

Hucks said the lot is surrounded by properties zoned R-1, with existing development consisting primarily of detached single family homes…
