U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wrapping up renourishment in Myrtle Beach, preparing for work in Surfside Beach, Garden City areas

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — An ongoing $72 million beach renourishment project is winding down in Myrtle Beach ahead of Fourth of July festivities. However, there’s work still to be done as the project moves south along the coast, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a news release.

Active sand placement in Myrtle Beach should finish by Friday, the Corps said. However, crews will still be doing work that will require a section of the beach to remain closed.

“The primary purpose of this renourishment is to build a wider, higher beach and dune system capable of absorbing storm wave energy, which protects oceanfront homes, businesses, roads and utilities from flooding and structural damage,” the Corp said. “While the wide, sandy beach also offers an inviting shoreline for tourists and the public, coastal protection remains the primary goal.”…
