Tributes from Grand Strand, Pee Dee agencies pour in after Columbia officer killed in shooting

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF/WIS) – Law enforcement agencies in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee are sending support after a Columbia police officer was killed in a Saturday shooting.

The Columbia Police Department said the shooting near a park on Hazelwood Road led to the death of 29-year-old Chris DeLong, WIS reported.

The department hired DeLong in 2024, and he graduated from the Criminal Justice Academy in January 2025, when he was assigned to the Southeast region.

Another officer, David Dymock, was injured in the shooting, and authorities said he is in stable condition.

Police say the suspect, 33-year-old Adam Dowdy of Prosperity, was also killed in the shooting.

After officers received a call around 9:27 a.m. about a domestic dispute, in which a woman told police she had a restraining order against Dowdy, officers responded to 951 Hazelwood Road about a suspicious person standing near a vehicle that matched the description…
