Atlantic Beach looks to resume efforts giving Horry County control of its elections

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — With Atlantic Beach in July finally certifying the results of its 2023 mayoral race, the town is resuming its efforts to transfer future elections to Horry County, according to Monday’s council agenda.

The town council will discuss a second reading of an ordinance to transfer future elections to Horry County. The town initially gave it final approval in April 2024, but since then, Horry County told Atlantic Beach that the request would be tabled until the town had certified all contested elections and races.

Also on Monday’s agenda in executive session is a “police chief hiring update,” though no other details were provided. Chief Jody Cooper resigned from the position in February over conditions he called “impossible” to work in just months after the termination of interim chief Carlos Castillo…
