Horry County official describes critical role in emergency response

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Before police, fire, or EMS arrive at the scene of an emergency, a 9-1-1 dispatcher is often the first person who responds.

Nationwide, 9-1-1 centers handle more than three million calls every year, according to 911.gov.

“The first seconds of a 911 call, we are trying to obtain your location; that’s vital,” Allen said. “The most important piece that we can get is what is the location of the emergency. That’s why we ask and preface when we answer the phone is ‘Horry County 911, what is the address of your emergency,’ because if we don’t know where to send the responders, we can’t get you help.”…
