Drivers to face lower speed limit on Highway 544 after crash involving CCU students

Coastal Carolina University, in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, is making changes along Highway 544 in the hopes that it will improve public safety in the area, the university announced Monday.

The university and the SCDOT plans on changing the speed limit to 35 mph, enhancing pavement markings in the Highway 544 corridor and installing a HAWK pedestrian-activated signal, which signals for drivers to stop once pedestrians press a button to cross the highway.

The announcement comes almost a month after two CCU students, Kalina Trent, 21, and Maddie Wilshire, 21, were struck by a driver while attempting to cross Highway 544. Trent died from her injuries a week later, and Wilshire was hospitalized, suffering a fractured back and broken pelvis and leg…
