Little River church tackles senior food insecurity with monthly drive

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. (WBTW) — St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Little River hosts a monthly food drive to support low-income seniors in accessing fresh and nutritious meals.

Feeding America research suggests that more than 7 million seniors could be food insecure by 2050.

Every fourth Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the church opens its doors for anyone 62 or older. All that is required is proof of identification.

The church, in its second month of sponsoring a senior food drive, collaborates with Food Lion and Kroger to obtain food items at reduced prices.

Church administrator Van Evans said the initiative offers seniors not just essential groceries, but also an opportunity to socialize and connect with others in their community.

“It gives us so much pleasure. We get to meet people that we have not met before we even get to listen to their stories if they have anything they want to share,” Evans said. “Sometimes, you know people just want someone to talk with to just to get out with and socialize and socializing and giving back to them to do things that they wouldn’t need to keep them strong.”
