Horry County cross-burning suspects could be evicted

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The home of an Horry County man and woman accused of using racially-abusive language and lighting a cross on fire facing their neighbors could be turned into a public nuisance.

Alexis Paige Hartnett and Worden Evander Butler, who live at the home, were charged by Horry County authorities with second-degree harassment in the Nov. 24 cross-burning incident . Both were booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Nov. 30 and released the following day, online jail records show. Hartnett also faces a third-degree assault and battery charge.

Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson recently petitioned an Horry County court to make the residence on Corbett Drive a public nuisance. The petition also pushes for a temporary injunction or restraining order that could remove all residents from the home.

The temporary injunction could also mean that the home could close until the case is taken to court.

If the home becomes a public nuisance, the people in the home would also be prohibited from “interfering with the furniture, equipment fixtures, and other property,” documents show.
