Horry County election clerk reflects on 62 years of service

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A poll worker who has worked in Horry County for 62 years reflets on the changes she has seen.

Genice Legette, stationed at a Myrtle Beach voting precinct, came prepared with her election gear, which included: voting signs, ballots, a ballot scanner, extension cords, and a black book with election day procedures.

Recalling her beginnings as a poll worker, Legette said a precinct used to be behind her house.

“I would jump the ditch and I knew all of the people over there,” Legette said. “And I would work with them, and I just stayed, and this is where I am today, as a clerk, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Legette reflected on when paper ballots were the norm.

“Paper ballots… that was fun back then,” she recalls.

Legette talked about the declining voter turnout and encouraged people not to lose faith.

“People just aren’t getting out there, saying, ‘my vote doesn’t count,” she said. “I hear it a lot. I want to encourage them to register to vote. Try it, see how you like it, you might want to work with us.”
