HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – A 2024 Homeowners Association report released by the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs shows Horry County leading the state in Home Owners Association complaints for the 5th year in a row.
The report also shows more than 360 complaints filed against nearly 300 HOAs or management companies in South Carolina.
That number is a 32% increase in complaints compared to 2022. Horry County accounted for 24.4% of the complaints, being the leading county once again.
Scott Cooke with the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs said the increase in complaints could be due to the amount of people moving to the state rapidly.
“A lot of these new homes that people are moving into are HOA communities, especially along the coast in Myrtle Beach and Horry County,” Cooke said.
The department has been required to collect and present the data to lawmakers since 2018.
The top three issues raised were failure to enforce HOA rules, maintenance or repair concerns and disagreement with HOA fees and special assessments.
