Horry County officials discuss new evacuation zones, OK grants for police department

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Horry County Public Safety Committee met Tuesday afternoon to discuss multiple proposals to benefit law enforcement as well as new evacuation zones for the county.

The approved proposals include a grant for Horry County police up to $120,000 and a crisis grant for up to $236,000.

The committee also approved an application from Horry County Fire Rescue to South Carolina’s “opioid recovery fund board” to hire two more harm reduction specialists.

The new evacuation zoning across Horry County comes after new information from the National Hurricane Center’s storm surge grid data.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division said it included expertise from the county so that zones are more consistent with likely storm surge impacts. It will also shorten the clearance time for the evacuations.
