Betty Tilton Edgeworth stood in the shade of the tobacco barn, looping cotton string around fresh-cut tobacco leaves, lashing them to a wooden pole for curing. Her hands a blur, she repeated the process again and again, taking the bunched tobacco from her hander, stringing the leaves in a row.
