Residents in soaked parts of Socastee coping with Waccamaw River’s continued rise

SOCASTEE, S.C. (WBTW) – The Waccamaw River is bursting its banks in some areas, impacting residents who live on and near it.

Rosewood Drive in Socastee has been flooded for about a week and a half now and more water is supposed to be coming in.

Tom Lyons and his wife own an Airbnb on Rosewood Drive, and they’ve already had to cancel a reservation due to the flooding.

Despite the revenue loss, Lyons said they’re using the time to dry the home out. They’ve also left out rafts for people to get to and from their houses if necessary.

“Once it floods, they can’t stay here,” he said.

Lyons many people are staying inside of their homes since the water is already shin deep, and worry about how much worse it could get.

“Trying to clean up everything and get everything off the ground. I don’t know how high it’s going to go, nobody knows,” he said.

A few years ago, Horry County received nearly $15.6 million after Hurricane Florence, giving some property owners in designated areas a chance to apply for relief — including the Rosewood Drive community.
