Conway City Council passes plan for 1,200 homes near Highway 378

CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — Conway City Council on Monday unanimously passed the second and final reading of a plan that will bring more than 1,200 homes into the city.

The plan to annex about 450 acres near Highway 378, Juniper Bay Road, Dayton Drive and Dunn Shortcut Road has been in front of the council since 2023, and it took a few times of going back to the drawing board before city leaders finally gave developers the go-ahead.

Developers initially wanted to build roughly 1,800 homes, but after concerns about traffic and density, the number was reduced to about 1,200. The plans also include a commercial use, city park and stormwater ponds.

Councilmember William Goldfinch said the structure of this plan is smart development.

“They can go in right now and no trails, no parks, no improvements, no nothing and build every bit of this out,” Goldfinch said. “But if my notes are correct, instead of building out 446 acres, we’re building out 240.”

However, many people News13 talked to on Monday in the Rosedale community off Dunn Shortcut Road said they’re disappointed in the councilmembers who supported the annexation. They expressed concerns over traffic, flooding, stormwater and school capacity.
