Atlantic Collegiate Academy starts school year in style with new facility

CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — An Horry County charter school started the year out in style in their new permanent building.

The Atlantic Collegiate Academy will no longer be operating out of Beach Church in Myrtle Beach, but in Conway on Bear Bluff Road.

The school currently serves 500 students who focus on both academics and athletics through a split schedule.

“We are so blessed to be here. The builders did a great job building this school. We were supposed to have school on Aug. 12, but we got pushed back, then the tropical storm came through which also caused some issues,” principal Mike Lorenz said. “So, we actually had to start our first day virtually on the 19th.”

Teachers and students began filling the classrooms once the school was given its certificate of occupancy. Lorenz said there has been no major problems during the transition, just minor things builders still need to fix.

He said the school’s design is simple.

“We have 17 classrooms, and we try to keep our class size low, below 25 per class,” Lorenz said. “The teachers really enjoy teaching here and the students love this environment.”
