The flight departed Myrtle Beach International Airport (KMYR) in South Carolina and was en route to Columbus County Municipal Airport (KCPC) in Whiteville, North Carolina. Shortly after departure from KMYR, the pilot reported to air traffic control (ATC) that he was having problems with the compass, which resulted in difficulty maintaining assigned headings. He stated that he wanted to return to the airport and was not declaring an emergency.
