Waccamaw High School student who threatened to burn school down told investigators it was a joke

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (WBTW) — A Waccamaw High School student has been charged after making a social media post late Thursday night saying they were going to burn down the school, the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office said.

This is the most recent in a string of threats against Georgetown County schools.

A 15-year-old student posted saying they had intentions of burning down Waccamaw High School. Georgetown County deputies and investigators responded but were unable to make contact with them Thursday night.

The student was escorted to the principal’s office by the school resource officer as soon as the student arrived Friday morning, where they were interviewed by investigators. The student said that the post was a joke.

No materials posing a threat were found during a home search.

The student was charged with making school threats and will be subject to the Georgetown County School District disciplinary policy. The school operated under normal conditions on Friday.
