Horry County police continue to investigate Friday shooting that left K9 officer dead

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Horry County Police Department’s probe into a Thursday officer-involved shooting that left a K9 dead is continuing, with an autopsy planned later this week for the alleged gunman.

Horry County spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov said officials from the agency cleared the scene around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Horry County police were asked Friday to investigate the Lee County incident that ended with the death of 27-year-old Austin Modlin.

Authorities said Modlin shot a McBee police officer during a traffic stop in Chesterfield County, prompting a multiagency search. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said the officer was in the hospital but expected to be OK.

Nexstar-affiliate WJZY in Charlotte reported that the officer was shot Thursday night near McBee High School and a convenience store near S. 11th Street. It did not happen on school property.

Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon said in a statement that one of his deputies was injured, while K9 officer Mikka was killed in the line of duty.
