Habitat for Humanity gets grant to help build 52 homes in Horry County

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Habitat for Humanity of Horry County recently received a $50,000 grant from Bank of America that will help it build affordable homes for low-to-moderate-income families in the county.

Over the next five to seven years, Habitat for Humanity said it will build 52 homes in three subdivisions throughout Horry County.

Bank of America and Habitat for Humanity have worked together for many years, helping deserving families find and build affordable homes.

A few years ago, Bank of America Myrtle Beach gave Habitat for Humanity of Horry County a $150,000 grant to revitalize the Booker T. Washington neighborhood.

Habitat for Humanity said the need for affordable housing has increased by 100%.

With the organization’s help, homebuyers’ mortgage on the 52 new homes will not be more than 30% of their income. This gives Horry County’s workforce more security, stability, and self-reliance.

“They have experienced what it means to have inadequate or under-resourced housing,” Meagan Michal, executive director at Habitat for Humanity of Horry County, said. “And so, they know what it’s like to not know where they might live next year, or how many years their lease will be renewed, or have kind of unsafe or unhealthy conditions. And so, a lot of times, when families are moving into their homes, the thing they’re looking forward to most is having a stable place.”
