Helene destruction resembles ‘war zone,’ Grand Strand business owner says after helping woman return home

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Many Grand Strand residents have been eager to help those affected by Helene, but a Garden City businessman went above and beyond, and in the process, got a firsthand look at the storm’s destruction.

Robert Rosenblum and Faye Shelton met over the weekend when Shelton needed a truck and trailer to gather supplies to take back home. Shelton, who’s from Asheville, North Carolina, but has a home in the Murrells Inlet area, weathered Friday’s storm on the Grand Strand while her husband remained in North Carolina.

Rosenblum, who owns Anything Goes in Garden City, answered the call, and the two left late Sunday night for Asheville. After he returned on Monday, he said what they saw looked like a “war zone.”

“The houses, there are some that are still standing, there are some that are totally gone, vehicles,” Rosenblum said. “There was a campground right below [Shelton’s] home, the campers were on top of each other. They just never expected the wall of water to come off the mountains the way it has.”
