Grand Strand volunteers committed to Helene relief more than a week after storm’s destruction

CAROLINA FOREST, S.C. (WBTW) — More than a week after Hurricane Helene devastated the Upstate and western North Carolina, Grand Strand volunteers are continuing to support those impacted with events held by churches and community members.

A local business on Saturday teamed up with Carolina Forest Community Church with one goal in mind: To fill a U-Haul truck with as many goods as possible.

Extra Room Self Storage started collecting items around 8 a.m., and stayed until the vehicle was at maximum capacity.

Jessica Griffith, facility manager at Extra Room Self Storage, said they wanted to do anything they could to help those affected by Helene.

“We’re definitely going to do our part, I mean we’re no strangers to hurricanes, and what happened out there was biblical,” she said.

Community members brought hundreds of pounds of dog food, water, feminine hygiene products, first aid items, non-perishable food and even a baby crib.

Griffith says the devastation in North Carolina resonates with everyone.
