Atlantic Beach leaders fire attorney, interim town manager over unauthorized meeting cancellations

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Atlantic Beach leaders fired their interim town manager and attorney on Wednesday night after what they said was a second unauthorized meeting cancellation in a week — a stall tactic to bar one member from finally taking office.

Council members Edward Campbell, John David and Carla Taylor convened under the night sky to remove the men — Orton Bellamy and Dwayne Green respectively — after a regularly scheduled meeting was supposedly cancelled shortly before its expected 7 p.m. start time.

A similar situation took place Monday.

David told News13 he spoke with Bellamy around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and got no indication that the meeting was to be cancelled.

“About 15 minutes after that I was notified that it was cancelled, and he did not have a quorum to cancel the council meeting on Monday or today, and we went ahead with the meeting outside the town hall. He locked all the doors and told the staff to go home,” David said.

Proceedings of Wednesday’s meeting were recorded and will be transcribed as minutes, David said.
