Hit-and-run crash kills person in Myrtle Beach area. Report says it involved a moped

A person died after being struck by a car early Saturday morning in the Myrtle Beach area, but highway patrol and rescue crews have provided conflicting information of whether the person was on foot or riding a moped.

South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a pedestrian was in the roadway on Claypond Road in the Forestbrook community about 3:45 a.m. Dec. 21 when they were struck by a vehicle, according to an email from Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway. The vehicle then left the scene, he said.

However, Horry County Fire Rescue reported in a Facebook post that the crash involved a moped. It is unclear if the victim was walking or riding.

The victim, who was not named, died at the scene, Ridgeway said. The vehicle has not been identified, Ridgeway said.
