Severe storms possible on Sunday

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – Warmer weather has finally returned to the area. Temperatures today across the Pee Dee, Grand Strand made it back into the 70s. Tonight lows will fall into the 60s with mild and breezy conditions.

A strong cold front will push into the area Sunday. First entering Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina tomorrow morning. Moving into the Midlands and Pee Dee by early afternoon. Finally approaching the Grand Strand and Low Country by midafternoon.

Currently the entire forecast area is under a level 2 risk of severe weather. All modes of severe weather are possible across the area.

The primary concern will be more damaging winds. The atmospheric winds just above the surface will be strong. Upwards of 40-50 mph’s. Wind behind the front will be strong as well coming out of the west. So, a southerly wind ahead of the front and westerly wind behind the front could allow for stronger cells to rotate Sunday afternoon.

The tornado potential is low, but not zero. The zone to watch for the best chances of seeing tornadoes develop would be from Augusta, Columbia, Charlotte, Fayetteville to Florence. Smaller threat along the coast, but not zero.
