HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The topic of Interstate 73’s possible expansion into South Carolina toward Myrtle Beach still looms large heading into 2025.
It very well could be that the state’s sixth interstate remains a pipe dream, but the very real concerns of a built-out I-73 remain.

In April, conservation group American Rivers listed the 118-mile Little Pee Dee River among the nation’s top 10-most at risk, based solely on the prospect of a thoroughfare plowing through its wetlands and streams, creating even more flood risks.
A finished I-73 is estimated to create 29,000 jobs and cut evacuation times by up to 15 hours. Officials said it would take about $300 million to build out the first six miles to Highway 501 with an I-95 interchange. The total cost is about $2 billion.
