MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Sunday’s high temperatures were record-breaking. North Myrtle Beach and Florence broke their 1999 records of 74 and 79. North Myrtle hit 80 and Florence topped 82 degrees. Lumberton tied a 100-year-old record of 79 degrees. Monday’s temperatures will be the warmest in the morning and gradually fall through the afternoon.
A cold front pushed that through the area on Sunday, along with cold-air damming, will bring cooler temperatures through the middle of the week. Cold air damming sets up in the Carolinas when there is high pressure to the north over New England which helps to funnel colder air to the south. Due to the geography of the Carolinas, the Appalachian Mountains to the west, cold air will puddle up east of the mountains because cold air is more dense and likes to hug the ground.
Afternoon temperatures will be in the upper-40s and low-50s with overcast skies and a few spotty showers. Tonight will be cloudy with lows in the upper-30s to near 40 degrees. Expect cool, cloudy weather for Tuesday as well…
