Community commemorates 70 years since Hurricane Hazel devastated Myrtle Beach coast

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — A special presentation commemorating the 70th anniversary of Hurricane Hazel drew a crowd to Chapin Memorial Library Wednesday.

On the morning of Oct. 15, 1954, one of the worst hurricanes to make landfall in South Carolina moved ashore on the South Carolina/North Carolina line, near Calabash and Little River, as a powerful Category 4 cyclone.
