‘It’s just words’: Myrtle Beach man challenging 45-year-old city law

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A Myrtle Beach man is fighting the city in federal court over its 45-year-old disorderly conduct law that he claims violates the Constitution.

Timothy Augustus Ward lodged a complaint in April against police officer Khalil Love, who on March 23 detained him outside the Bar Harbor hotel following a verbal altercation that ended with Ward saying “F— you” to Love.

Ward said the move violated his First Amendment rights, but a 45-year-old law prohibits anyone within municipal limits from using language or behaving in a way that could “incite public disorder.”…
