Missing swimmer recovered near Pawleys Island was 38-year-old man, chief says

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (WBTW) — Georgetown County authorities have recovered the body of a man who drowned after going out to help swimmers in distress near Pawleys Island on Sunday evening.

The person’s identity was not immediately known, but authorities said the recovery happened around 5 p.m. Pawleys Island Police Chief Michael Fanning told News13 the body was a 38-year-old man from Atlanta, Georgia.

A Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office marine unit and Coast Guard helicopter were in the area of Atlantic Avenue after bystanders were unable to help a person in the water…
