Veteran Horry County fire coordinator recounts ‘heavyweight battle’ in Carolina Forest

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — This spring’s large wildfires that slashed through Carolina Forest were a challenge nearly unmatched in Horry County’s recent history, a veteran first responder said Tuesday.

“It was like a heavyweight battle,” Capt. Tim Rainbolt, Horry County Fire Rescue’s wildfire coordinator, said in an interview posted to the agency’s social media platforms. “Once this call started, I didn’t stop. I think it was 60 hours straight before I even left.”

Officials on June 4 said the 2,059-acre Covington Drive wildfire had been fully controlled after 95 days. The blaze, which sparked on March 1, threatened thousands of homes as it moved through major developments including Avalon and Walker’s Woods…
