Myrtle Beach Fire Department pushing for ’24-on, 72-off’ schedule change

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – The Myrtle Beach Fire Department is hoping to add an additional day to the time off their members receive, which they said will be beneficial not only to their department, but to the community.

Firefighters currently work 24-hour shifts before spending the next 48 hours off. While this may sound ideal on the surface, Captain Jonathan Evans said this schedule can be exhausting.

“These men and women are working a 53-hour work week, where you’re typically working a 40-hour work week,” Evans said. “And so that can be a very taxing thing on your body, on your mind, on your family life, all those different things.”…
