MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – Hurricane Erin has re-intensified into a category 4 major hurricane Sunday evening. Life threating surf and rip currents are likely across the East coast of the United States this week, as Hurricane Erin continues grow.
The 11 pm advisory has Hurricane Erin, located 965 miles south southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Winds are now at 130 mph. Erin is moving Northwest at 12 mph. Pressure is down to 942 mb.
A Tropical Storm Warning remains for the Turks and Caicos Islands, as well as Southeast Bahamas. A Tropical Storm Warning means that Tropical Storm Conditions are expected within the next 24 hours in the warned areas. The National Hurricane Center urges folks from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to The Bahamas, and Bermuda should monitor Erin throughout the next several days.
Locally, impacts will be in the form of dangerous rip currents, starting Monday through the end of the week for the Grand Strand.
Other impacts will be from high surf conditions. The Grand Strand could see between 5-7 foot waves Tuesday night through Thursday. Minor coastal flooding, and beach erosion will be possible during high tide cycles.
