PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (WPDE) — South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts (SCUTE) held an inventory after the 10th loggerhead turtle nest hatched in Pawleys Island.
The goal of the event was to dig up as many turtles and see how many successfully hatched while also educating the public about the effects of Hurricane Erin.
Hurricane Erin tore up two nests, one at Hobcaw and one at DeBordieu, and we’ve had a lot of nests with washover.” Head of SCUTE, Rick Scott said. “So we won’t know until they hatch what impact that washover effect had, hopefully it didn’t have much, if any, I mean, you know it rains sometimes 2-3 inches a night.
