This Day in History: Aug. 30, 1960: ‘Wade-in’ attempted at Myrtle Beach State Park

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WCSC) – Sixty-five years ago, a group attempted a “wade-in” at the Myrtle Beach State Park as part of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Rev. Isaiah DeQuincey Newman, the field secretary for the South Carolina NAACP, led a group of African Americans for the wade-in on Aug. 30, 1960. The South Carolina State Park Service says a white couple from Brooklyn, New York, joined the group.

The protest came as Civil Rights activism in the state grew more frequent and bold.

Park officials denied the group, including the New York couple, entry at the gate to the park…
