New Horry County police unit targets internet crimes against children

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The Horry County Police Department is adding a new unit that will focus on finding child victims of online crimes, building a case against the perpetrators, and finding online predators before they can reach their victims.

Chief Kris Leonhardt says it’s a proactive step by HCPD to protect kids. The blended juvenile crimes unit will initially have a supervisor and at least two investigators who will be housed with the Behavioral Services Unit with Horry County Government.

Members of this unit will work with Behavioral Services using cutting-edge tracking tools to identify both predators and potential victims. They will be trained in technology and several other law enforcement-sensitive programs…
