Myrtle Beach looks at new rules for electric scooters after spike in traffic collisions

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The city of Myrtle Beach is looking to craft new regulations for electric scooters after seeing an increase in traffic collisions in recent years.

Myrtle Beach Police Officer Drew Longshore told city council members during a presentation at a workshop Tuesday morning that a proposed ordinance is being driven by an increase in the number of crashes involving PEDS, or personal electric devices, over the past three years.

The city says there have been significant injuries in the crashes, some of which were caused by riders were going the wrong way in traffic, riding on sidewalks with pedestrians and failing to obey traffic devices and other regulations. The city also says there has been an increase in residents’ complaints related to “the dangerous operation and reckless behavior of the operators.”…
