This Day in History: Sept. 13, 1974: Ocean Forest Hotel destroyed in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WCSC) – On this date, 51 years ago, a grand hotel built along the ocean in Myrtle Beach fell to the wrecking ball.

All that remains now of the Ocean Forest Hotel is a circular drive along Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, the Horry County Museum and South Carolina History Trail say.

The hotel was a massive building that helped transform the town into a national beach resort. The South Carolina History Trail said the plan was to build a giant Riviera-style resort for America’s wealthy.

A second phase of the grand resort was unveiled in 1929…
