Meetings set for potential $800 million highway extension to link Carolinas

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Planning is officially underway for a nearly $800 million project to extend Highway 31 in Horry County across state lines. Both the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the South Carolina Department of Transportation have set dates to discuss the project.

If you drive along Highway 17, buckle up and listen closely. According to NCDOT, the potential nine-figure expansion project will alleviate congestion and make your commute a little easier, whether you’re a tourist or a local.

The proposed project will extend Carolina Bays Parkway across state lines from Highway 9 in Horry County all the way to Highway 17 in Brunswick County, North Carolina.
